Ya llevamos un par de años enseñando los ganadores del Bird Photographer of the Year, una competición que bien podría ser el certamen especializado en aves más importante del mundo y que nos regala unas espectaculares fotografías de pájaros para deleitarnos la vista.
Además de por dar protagonismo a esta disciplina (que en otros concursos se incluye dentro de categorías como los animales o la vida salvaje) este certamen de origen británico con cinco ediciones a sus espaldas destaca también por destinar sus beneficios a Birds on the Brink, una organización benéfica dedicada a la conservación de las aves.

Sea como fuere, este certamen busca celebrar la belleza y diversidad de los pájaros y está estructurado en torno a ocho categorías, incluyendo la nueva ‘Black and White’, y cinco premios especiales, con la novedad del nuevo ‘Conservation Documentary’ (que premia un trabajo de entre tres a seis fotos acompañadas de un texto que documente la historia detrás de un problema medioambiental o de conservación de las aves).
El premio principal, denominado ‘Bird Photographer of the Year’ y dotado con una cantidad en metálico de 5.000 libras (bastante más que el año pasado) fue a parar al kuwaiti Majed AlZa’abi por la foto que habéis visto en portada (con la que también gano la categoría 'Best Portrait'). Una imagen titulada ‘End of the Day’ que muestra a una pareja de cormoranes con un estilo impresionista que cautivó a los jueces (que unánimemente declararon que les hubiera gustado hacer esa foto).
Por lo que toca al premio ‘Young Bird Photographer of the Year’, para el mejor fotógrafo joven, el ganador fue el británico Adam Lake por una foto tomada con un móvil, mientras que el vencedor del ‘Inspirational Encounters’ fue el canadiense Gail Bisson con una foto de un petrel de Providence, un ave en peligro de extinción con una triste historia detrás.

En cuanto a la participación nacional, si el año pasado no hubo ningún español entre los ganadores, éste tenemos que felicitarnos porque son cuatro los que se traen alguno de los premios para España. Especialmente destaca la plata y el bronce logradas por Kiko Arcas y Carlos Cifuentes (respectivamente) en categoría ‘Garden and Urban Birds’. También los bronces obtenidos por Francis De Andrés y Juan Pablo Plaza Pozo en las categorías ‘Attention to Detail’ y ‘Black and White’.
